The Legend of Nam Ob Nang Loy
Hiang T.Chiengthong - Nangloy's First Generation
Nam Ob Nang Loy was established over 110 years ago by Grandmother Hiang or Mother Hiang, who learned the traditional Thai perfume-making method from a friend of hers in the royal court. Mother Hiang then studied and adapted this recipe, blending the fragrant scents of various Thai flowers and herbs with Western perfumes that were gaining popularity at the time. This fusion became the distinctive characteristic of Nam Ob Nang Loy, known for its refreshing, cool fragrance and amber-yellow color.
Mother Hiang first began selling Thai perfume at Nang Loy Market next to Bophit Phimuk Temple in the Chakrawat area of Bangkok. At that time, there was no brand name or trademark, and the perfume was sold by measure. Customers would bring their own containers and take it home for use.
Due to its unique fragrance, Mother Hiang's Thai perfume became very popular. Customers began spreading words of mouth as "Thai perfume from Mother Hiang at Nang Loy Market." Over time, this phrase evolved into "Nam Ob Nang Loy from Mother Hiang," which eventually became the name "Nam Ob Nang Loy" as it is known today.
Later, Mother Hiang changed the sales method from selling by measure to packaging in bottles. She also designed a trademark featuring an angel floating on a cloud, holding a bottle of Thai perfume in her left hand, adorned with Thai patterns around her. The colors used for the trademark are predominantly red, white, and blue, reflecting the colors of the Thai national flag to signify its Thai heritage.
Nangloy's Second Generation presented the products to Their Majesties, the King Rama IX and Queen of Thailand
Subsequently, Mother Hiang began introducing other products under the "Nam Ob Nang Loy" brand, including Nang Loy White Clay, Nang Loy Scented Powder, and Nang Loy Scented Candle. These products also gained significant popularity. As the business expanded, Mother Hiang decided to move from Nang Loy Market to a larger store on Mahachai Road, in the Samran Rat area, opposite Wat Thep Thidaram and Wat Ratchanadda. This location remains the store's site till this day.Later generations of Mother Hiang's successors continued to sell Nang Loy products through various retail channels and distributors, establishing the "Nam Ob Nang Loy" brand as a well-known name. Today, the products are popular and recognized throughout the country.
Although the usage of Thai perfume and related products may have declined among younger generations, thus most usage occurring during the Songkran Festival.
